People Kill People...

Handgun ownership is STUPID. Period.

I absolutely fly into a (non-homicidal) rage when I hear someone say "Guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people.". Let me just state, for those hard of understanding, the very obvious point that NO ONE has died from a gunshot wound by a gun NOT wielded by a person.

For the terminally stupid, that is to say TAKE THE GUNS AWAY FROM THE PEOPLE -- PROBLEM SOLVED!

While I totally agree that people have to be held accountable for their actions, and that no gun is to blame for any death ever committed -- the fact still remains that people + guns = death.

Now, you might say that we need guns to protect ourselves. Fine. Keep non-automatic rifles and shotguns legal. I can't really imagine someone stuffing a hunting rifle down the back of their pants and then waltzing into a Safeway, a shopping mall, or a McDonalds UNDETECTED and killing dozens of people.

Not to mention, there are more deaths by suicide with guns in the US each year than murders. Try to put the end of a hunting rifle in your mouth and pull the trigger… If you are actually STUPID enough to try this because I said to, then lucky for you, it can't be done.

And just in case you were wondering, there tend to be just over 100 deaths per year in the United States from home invasions gone wrong… A little hard to estimate because of the way home invasion crimes are varied. But if you think you really need a gun to protect yourself from THAT, stop driving your car. You are much more likely to be killed in it than in your home by a burglar!

Today's tragedy would be limited to one, two, or three people critically injured and not 6 or 7 dead, 10 or 11 injured, had the assailant been armed with a giant hunting knife.

The TRUTH of the matter is, 35,000 people were killed by guns last year, and it takes absolutely no imagination to understand how many would have been saved, if handguns, semi- and automatic weapons, and assault rifles had NEVER been legal.
